Prof. Dr. Md. Zulfeqar Haider is a Professor of English and a senior member of the BCS (General Education) Cadre. He has been working as a teacher, teacher trainer, textbook writer, curriculum designer and assessment specialist for the government of Bangladesh for the last 31 years.
Dr. Haider obtained his MA in English from Jahangirnagar University in 1989 and did an MEd, TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Monash University, Australia in 2003. He was awarded both the Monash International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (MIPRS) and Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS) to peruse doctoral studies and obtained PhD Monash University in 2018.
Dr. Haider joined the government service in 1993 through 14th BCS. After serving a couple of government colleges in Chattogram and Cumilla as a lecturer in English, he joined the English Language Teaching Improvement Project (ELTIP) as a teacher trainer, Bangladesh and trained thousands of secondary school teachers across the country. Later, he resumed teaching English at different government colleges in Madaripur, Tangail and Mymensingh. He was promoted as a professor in 2016 and served as the Head, Department of English, Govt. Muminunnisa Mohila College, Mymensingh for about 6 1/2 years. Later, he joined the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) and worked as a Senior Curriculum Specialist for about 1½ years.
Dr. Haider received professional training from renowned training institutions such as NAEM, MoE, ICT Project, DSHE, College of St. Mark and St. Jhon, UK, Anglia Ruskin University, UK, Hawaii Pacific University, USA, Monash College, Australia and British Council, Dhaka and Sri Lanka. He is also a recipient of the E-Scholarships awarded by the Department of State, USA to peruse online training from Arizona State University, University of Oregon, and University of Maryland, Baltimore City, USA.
Besides teaching and training Dr Haider is engaged in textbook writing, curriculum design and educational research. He is the author of nine English textbooks of NCTB titled English for Today. He served on a number of curriculum committees of NCTB since 2012 as a subject expert.
Dr. Haider also devotes himself to educational research and has authored 30 articles and book chapters so far which have been published from reputed publishers like Routledge, Springer, Multilingual Matters, Science Direct-Elsevier etc. His most outstanding academic contribution includes the editing of the Routledge Handbook of English Language Education in Bangladesh published by Routledge UK & New York in 2021. He is also the co-editor of the book Language in Society in Bangladesh and Beyond: Voices from the Global South published by Routledge in 2023.
