Prof. Dr. Md. Zulfeqar Haider is a Professor of English and a member of the BCS (General Education) Cadre. He has been working as a teacher, teacher trainer, textbook writer, curriculum designer and assessment specialist for the government of Bangladesh for the last 31 years.
Dr. Haider obtained BA (Hons.) and Masters in English from Jahangirnagar University in 1988 and 1989 respectively and did a Masters in Education, TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Monash University, Australia in 2003. Later, in 2013. He was awarded the Monash International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (MIPRS) and Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS) to embark on his doctoral studies in Monash. He obtained his PhD from the Faculty of Education, Monash University in 2018. His PhD thesis explores the exogenous and indigenous resources for the professional development of the English teachers in Bangladesh.
Dr. Haider joined the government service in 1993 through 14th BCS. After serving a number of government colleges in Chattogram and Cumilla. He embarked upon a career as teacher trainer in 1999 when he joined the English Language Teaching Improvement Project (ELTIP), of the British Council, UK and Ministry of Education, Bangladesh. He served this project for about eight years and trained thousands of secondary school teachers in different districts like Dhaka, Mymensingh, Tangail, Kishoreganj and Faridpur. After ELTIP, he taught at different government colleges in Madaripur, Tangail and Mymensingh. On being promoted as a professor in 2016 he served as the Head, Department of English, Govt. Muminunnisa Mohila College, Mymensingh for about 6 ½ years. In 2023a, he joined the National Curriculum and Textbook Board as a Senior Curriculum Specialist and worked for about 1 ½ years.
Dr Haider received professional training from NAEM, MoE, ICT Project, DSHE, College of St. Mark and St. Jhon, Exeter, UK, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK, Hawaii Pacific University, USA, Monash University English Language Centre, Monash College, Australia and British Council, Dhaka and Sri Lanka. He received the E-Scholarship awarded by the Department of State, USA for three times to peruse 3 online professional training from Arizona State University, University of Oregon, and University of Maryland, Baltimore City, USA.
Besides teaching and training Dr Haider is engaged in textbook writing, curriculum design and educational research. He is the author of 7 English textbooks of NCTB titled English for Today. He served on a number of Curriculum committees of NCTB since 2012 as a subject expert.
Dr. Haider also devotes himself in educational research. He has authored 30 articles and book chapters so far. His articles and book chapters have been published from reputed international publishers like Routledge, Springer, Multilingual Matters, ScienceDirect-Elsevier etc. His most outstanding academic contribution includes the editing of the Routledge Handbook of English Language Education in Bangladesh published by Routledge UK-New York in 2021. He is also the co-editor of the book titled Language in Society in Bangladesh and Beyond: Voices from the Global South published by Routledge in 2023. Besides publishing, he has also presented papers in international conferences held in Australia,
